Professor Gregory M.W. Kennedy (Brandon University), winner of the 2025 Grand Prize of the Institute of French American History, for his book Lost in the Crowd: Acadian Soldiers of Canada’s First World War (McGill-Queen’s University Press, 2024).
Professor Kennedy’s book was published in the Louis J. Robichaud Series, the result of an editorial and financial partnership between the Donald J. Savoie Institute and McGill-Queen’s University Press.
In its praise of Gregory Kennedy’s book, the jury commended “a fresh and profoundly human reading of the First World War [that] breathes new life into the forgotten stories of Acadian soldiers who participated in the war effort, thus offering a richer narrative not only of this major event, but also of Acadian history. While historiography has tended to emphasize the lack of Francophone involvement in the World Wars, Lost in the Crowd offers a different perspective: Acadians were just as eager to enlist as their Anglophone counterparts, an engagement that was partly strategic in increasing their legitimacy within Canada.”
